Is Lava Cake indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

Lava Cake is an indica-dominant hybrid of Thin Mint GSC, one of the main sub-types of GSC, and Grape Pie, which Weedmaps calls Cannarado Genetics’ Colorado-bred cross of Grape Stomper and Cherry Pie.1,2,3,4 Weedmaps credits Lava Cake to Cannarado too, but Leafly names no breeder and SeedFinder files the original under unknown breeders; a different Lava Cake from 707 Seed Bank crosses Thin Mint Cookies with 707 Chemdawg.1,5,6,7

The two parents

Thin Mint GSC, also called Thin Mint, Thin Mints and Thin Mint Cookies, is one of the main sub-types of GSC. Leafly lists its parents as OG Kush and F1 Durb, rates it mostly energizing and lists Lava Cake among its children; as Thin Mint Cookies it won Best Hybrid at the 2014 NorCal Medical Cannabis Cup.3,15

Grape Pie is an indica-leaning hybrid of Cherry Pie and Grape Stomper, which Leafly describes as a Gage Green Seeds cross of Purple Elephant and Chemdawg Sour Diesel; Leafly rates Grape Pie mostly calming.8,16 Weedmaps calls it Cannarado Genetics’ Colorado-bred cross, and SeedFinder says it picked up traction in Colorado thanks to Cannarado’s work and records a third place in the indica category at the 2018 Karma Cup.4,17

One name turns up on both sides of the family. Leafly lists F1 Durb, which its Purps genealogy describes as a cross by the Bay Area breeder Jigga, as a parent of Thin Mint and also of Cherry Pie, Grape Pie’s parent; Cherry Pie’s other parent is Granddaddy Purple.3,8,18,19

Who bred it? Accounts differ

Weedmaps says Cannarado Genetics created Lava Cake by crossing Thin Mint GSC with Grape Pie. The other databases we opened either name no breeder or file it as unknown.1,2,5,6

Where Cannarado comes in

Cannarado’s name turns up around Lava Cake more than once. Weedmaps credits it with Grape Pie, SeedFinder says Grape Pie gained ground in Colorado through its work, and Leafly credits PB Souffle, a Dosidos × Lava Cake cross, to a collaboration of Phinest and Cannarado.4,10,17 Leafly’s David Downs called Cannarado Colorado’s biggest breeder in 2025.21

One name, two crosses

Most sources give the same pair of parents, written in either order. 707 Seed Bank’s Lava Cake is a different cross, sold as regular seeds, which SeedFinder describes as minty, chocolate and skunky, with the Thin Mint side dominant.7

Everything else on this site describes the Thin Mint GSC × Grape Pie Lava Cake unless it says otherwise; our lab data cannot tell the versions apart, since both are sold under one name.

How indica is it?

Every source puts Lava Cake on the indica side. Leafly’s page shows a Hybrid badge but calls it an indica-hybrid with mostly calming effects; Weedmaps calls it an indica-leaning hybrid; AllBud and SeedFinder give 70% indica and 30% sativa, as does Plantation Premium Seeds for its seed version, and Zamnesia calls its versions mostly indica and indica-dominant.1,2,5,6,22,23,24 The parents lean apart: Leafly rates Thin Mint mostly energizing and Grape Pie mostly calming.3,8

Cuts, names and seed versions

Weedmaps and AllBud list Lava Cake #11 as another name for the strain, and Leafly’s Landslide page names one of its parents “Lava Cake #11 (Tahoe Hydro Cut)”; Weedmaps also lists Black Rock Lava Cake. None of these sources explains the names.2,5,12

SeedFinder says the original was never sold as feminized seeds, and it lists five Lava Cakes from different breeders: feminized versions from Zamnesia, Blim Burn Seeds and Plantation Premium Seeds, 707 Seed Bank’s regular seeds and the original.6,7,22,23,25,26 Zamnesia also sells an autoflowering version that adds ruderalis to Thin Mint GSC × Grape Pie.24
